Variable-wing aircraft have wings that can change their sweep angle during flight. This allows the aircraft to use straight wings for better lift at low speeds (takeoff and landing) and swept wings for stability and speed at high velocities. Famous examples include the Mikoyan‑Gurevich MiG‑23, Grumman F‑14 Tomcat, and General Dynamics F‑111 Aardvark—basically jets with “adjustable wings,” the aviation version of switching gears.
